Mona Mae (Guritz) Cantone

Mona M. Cantone, age 88, of Peotone, passed away on Sunday, December 14, 2025. She was surrounded by the love and comfort of her family.

Mona was born on February 15, 1937, at St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights, IL to Milford and Marie (Westenfeld) Guritz. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Beecher, IL.

Mona graduated from Peotone High School, later attending Marycrest Business School in Kankakee, IL where she studied secretarial and business courses. She started out at her first job in the office at Bennett Industries in Peotone, IL. Perhaps her biggest job was raising her seven children. There was always much to do and she did it all. All for the love of her children. Later on, she took on an additional role, and became an insurance agent. She worked for many years at several agencies, retiring from the First Community Insurance Center in Beecher, IL.

She was a member of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ in Beecher, IL, the Peotone American Legion Auxiliary where she was a Past President, as well as serving as the Treasurer for many years. She was a member of various other organizations, and volunteered her time to many.

Mona was a lifelong Peotone resident, where she grew up on the family farm, the place she called home. She enjoyed baking for her family and friends, and always entered her delicious baked goods in the Will County Fair. She could cook a good meal like no other. She enjoyed spending time with her family, always smiling, always helping others. She made the best coleslaw back in the day, for the Peotone American Legion Fish Fry. She enjoyed her yard work, shopping, traveling, and crafts. She loved singing in the church choir and enjoyed plays and musicals.

Mona is survived by her children, Carol (Charles) Stein, Anthony (Karen M.) Cantone, Guy (Barbara) Cantone, Paul Cantone (Laura Jurvich), Dean (Melanie) Cantone, Andrea Cantone Kuzma; daughter-in-law Karen S. Cantone; seventeen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; her sister, Phyllis (late Roger/2025) Tatro; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her oldest son, Michael Cantone (2018), and her former husband, Earl Cantone (2003).

She was also preceded in death by her beloved Missy, her little Jack Russell, her best pal. Mona took Missy for many rides in her car to get McDonald’s hamburgers for her and Missy, sporting her license plates “MRS MONA”.

Visitation will be held at Fedde-Helfrich-Cross Funeral Home, 112 W. Main Street, Peotone, IL on Thursday, December 18, 2025 from 3 pm to 7 pm, with memorial service beginning at 7 pm, officiated by Pastor Terry Krouskoupf.

Burial Service will be private.
