Leo J. Stender, age 100, of Peotone, died Saturday, March 9, 2013 at his home. Visitation will be held at the Fedde-Helfrich-Cross Funeral Home on Tueday, March 12, 2013 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Peotone on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at 11:00 a.m., Rev. Jonathan Krogh officiating. Interment will be at Peotone Cemetery. Memorials to the First Presbyterian Church of Peotone would be appreciated.

Mr. Stender was born on October 7, 1912 in Manteno, IL, the son of the late William and Emma (Riemers) Stender. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Florence H. (Offner) Stender (1981); his second wife, Dora A. (Krapf) Stender (2001); a brother, Harvey; 3 sisters, Florence, Mamie, and Elsie; and a step-daughter, Jeanette Horton.

He is survived by his daughter, Lynn A. Stender of Peotone; a brother, Orville Stender of Wisconsin; 2 step-sons, Clarence (Linda) Krapf of Demotte, IN and Harold (Brenda) Krapf of Crown Point, IN; a step-daughter, Barbara Hughes of Portage, IN; 13 step-grandchildren; 19 step-great-grandchildren; and 2 step-great-great grandchildren.

Mr. Stender was a retired maintenance supervisor at Bennett Industries in Peotone where he worked for over 50 years also a retired farmer. He was a former Peotone Village Board Trustee and also served as the long-time President of the Peotone Fire Department. In the early 1950's, he built his current home in Peotone where he still lived. He was an avid camper and loved to travel. He loved animals, especially his dogs. He always enjoyed a good meal, especially a patty melt and a cup of soup.
