John C. Smith, of Peotone, Illinois, passed away in his home on September 16, 2026. John enjoyed a remarkable career with International Harvester/Navistar/United Auto Workers (UAW) where he earned the respect of colleagues and friends through his dedication, leadership, and willingness to help others. John enjoyed spending time on the golf course, traveling with Penny, and cooking a meal with family. He will be remembered for his loud and unconditional love for his family, his playful nature, and the joy that radiated from him and touched everyone around him. John is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Penelope Smith; six children John (Jennifer) Smith, Candy (Steve) Baker, John Lance (Michelle) Smith, Angela (Matt) Yaeger, Christopher (Heather) Smith, Mary (Dan Cocot) Smith; fifteen grandchildren Stephanie (Laith) Callahan, John (Payton) Smith, Joshua (Emily) Smith, Jessica (Trevor) Skaggs, Nicholas Baker, Eleanor and Corinne Smith, Evette Tongren, Paige and Drew Yaeger, Penelope, Phoebe and Daphne Smith, Alice and Scarlett Cocot; and five great-grandchildren Karter, Dorothy, Charlie, Killian Callahan and John Luke Smith.
