James McDermand

James S. McDermand, age 86, of Andres, IL, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2014 at West Suburban Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bloomingdale, IL.

He was born in Chicago on June 7, 1928, the son of the late Sidney and Florence (Heninger) McDermand. He was a US Army Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. Mr. McDermand was a retired teacher, guidance counselor, and high school administrator. He began his teaching career in Crete, IL and then came to Peotone High School where he worked for 33 years. He was a math and science teacher, guidance counselor, and was the Principal of Peotone High School at the time of his retirement. He was an avid golfer and coached the Peotone High School golf team for several years. He loved animals, especially his dogs.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Charlotte (Geuther) McDermand, who he married on August 18, 1951 in Joliet, IL. He is also survived by his daughter, Tamra McDermand of Manhatan, IL; 2 granddaughters, Sydnee Rae and Mathilda Marie McDermand; a sister-in-law, Mary McDermand of Deerfield, IL; and 2 nephews, Matthew McDermand of Indianapolis, IL and Michael McDermand of Jacksonville, FL.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Charles McDermand; and a nephew, Christopher McDermand.

Services will be held at the Fedde-Helfrich-Cross Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 with visitation from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., Deacon Jim Kelly officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Frankfort, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Victory Reins Riding Center for Disabled Children would be appreciated.
