Irene E. Behrens, age 94, of Normal, IL; formerly of Peotone, IL, passed away Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal.

She was born September 1, 1919 in rural Manhattan, IL, the daughter of the late Adam and Alma (Carstens) Heisner. She married the late Norbert A. Behrens on April 16, 1945 in Peotone. He died on April 10, 2001. Mrs. Behrens was a retired Vice President of Peotone State Bank. She was a member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Peotone where she was active in the Women's Fellowship. She was very strong in her Christian faith. She was always very active in the community of Peotone and always thought of others before herself. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth (Cynthia) Behrens of Bloomington; 2 granddaughters and their husbands, Katherine (Rich) Brown of Bloomington and Kimberly (Andy) Kaufman of Normal; 2 sister-in-laws, Leora Cross of Aurora and Lois Heisner of Peotone; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 2 brothers, Kenneth and Harold Heisner; her sister, Eleanor Arnold; and her twin-sister, Arline Asbrand.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 4, 2014 from 2:00-7:00 p.m. at the Fedde-Helfrich-Cross Funeral Home in Peotone. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 5, 2014 at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Peotone, Rev. Dwight Gorbold officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be at Peotone Cemetery. Memorials to the Immanuel United Church of Christ would be appreciated.
