Don was born, raised, and lived his entire life in Peotone. He dedicated 13 years to serving as a Peotone police officer and spent another 25 years with the Illinois Department of Transportation. Even after retiring from IDOT, Don never slowed down. He enjoyed working; whether painting or working for his longtime friend at BAP. He took immense pride in his work ethic and worked as long as he could.
Don was a master mason and life member of Crete Lodge 763 as well as a lifetime Moose member.
Don found joy in the simple pleasures: cruising down country roads, as long as it was a Ford, stopping for a beer & shot at a bar or escaping to Florida beaches to vacation with his wife and chihuahua Rosie. Despite his love for warm weather, Christmas was his favorite time of year and he lit up the season with his spirit.
Don was an amazing loving husband and a loyal friend —but let’s be honest, he was a character. Strong-willed, stubborn, never one to hold back. He spoke his mind, and didn’t care if it was offensive, but those who truly knew him saw He had a huge heart, was fiercely loyal, endlessly caring, and remarkably generous. That’s what made Don, Don—He was authentic, and one of a kind.
He asked that anyone wishing to honor his life, and friendship remember him by raising a shot of Jack to his memory.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Jackie, two children from a previous marriage, Stefanie Horn & Kimberlee (Phil) Meli, two stepdaughters, Rebecca (Paul) DeLuca and Elaine (Ramon) Villanueva, and grandchildren he adored; Casey (16), Eleanor (11), and Charlotte (6). Don was preceded in death by his parents Wally, Eleanor and brother Doyle.
Per Don’s wishes, no funeral or memorial service will be held. He’ll be forever deeply missed and never forgotten.
Rest in peace
